Description
We find that the traditionally washed coffees of La Maravilla are bursting with flavor year after year. The bright profile of Parainema is characterized by fresh citrus juice notes as well as sassafras.
SOURCING STORY
Each year, when visiting Juan Evangelista, he proudly takes us to his nursery. “More Pacamara!” he proudly exclaims. With every good story, there’s a twist. Juan’s variety is not Pacamara, but instead, Parainema - a hybrid coffee variety that is resistant to rust and nematode infestations, and which has a large bean size similar to Pacamara. This variety began in 1981 as part of a series of experiments to address producers' issues with disease and pests and was known as Sarchimor T-5269. First plantings were in Costa Rica from 2006 - 2008, and it was introduced to Honduras in 2010 as “Parainema”. Juan’s seeds came from his neighbor Eulogio. When Eulogio originally received the seeds, they were listed as Pacamara, but now we believe that was a typo since the physical markers of the plants identify as Parainema. We’ve been buying coffee from Juan for over 12 years now and he’s an absolute pleasure to work with. His coffees are always superbly consistent, reliable and unmistakable in their character.
